BYLAWS OF THE LYDIA SHEPHERD CHAPTER OF NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY

PEPPERELL HIGH SCHOOL

This chapter is chartered by the National Association of Secondary School Principals and governed by the Constitution of the National Honor Society of Secondary Schools.

ARTICLE I
Membership

Section 1.  Members shall be selected by faculty council composed of five members.  Each year five faculty members will be appointed to serve on this council by the principal.  Members may serve more than one year.

Section 2.  The first step in the selection process will be a review of students’ academic records to determine those meeting the criteria for this chapter which is a 93 GPA or higher.

Section 3.  The faculty council will then review the students’ records and ask for information about the qualities of character, leadership, and service they have exhibited.

Section 4.  Candidates and their parents will be notified of their selection in writing.

Section 5.  An induction ceremony will be held at the end of first semester and at other times if necessary.

Section 6.  Dues will be $5.00 per year of which $3.00 will be sent to the Georgia Association of NHS to maintain a chapter membership therein.

Section 7.  Members are expected to attend all regularly scheduled meetings, to assist in fund-raising events, and to participate in at least 4 of the chapter service projects each year.

ARTICLE II
Officers


Section 1.  The officers of this chapter shall be President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Historian, Chaplain, and Parliamentarian.

Section 2.  The term of office shall be one year.

Section 3.  Duties of the Officers
           
A. It shall be the duty of the President to:
1.  Preside at all meetings of the club and at Executive Committee Meetings.
2.  To represent the club at all public occasions.

3.  Appoint all committees and serve as an ex officio member of them.
4.  Prepare and distribute the newsletter with the assistance of the other officers.
            B. It shall be the duty of the Vice-president to:
1.  Perform the duties of the president in their absence.
2.  Coordinate the activities of all committees.
3.  Perform any duties delegated by the President.
            C. It shall be the duty of the Secretary to:
1.  Record and keep minutes of all meetings.
2.  Maintain an accurate membership roll.
3.  Record service projects performed by each member.
4.  Conduct correspondence for the club and assist the President with                            the newsletter.
            D. It shall be the duty of the Treasurer to:
1.  Collect, write receipts, and keep a record of membership dues payments.
2.  Present the Treasurer’s report at every meeting.
3.  Work with the advisors to pay all bills in a timely manner.
            E. It shall be the duty of the Historian to:
1.  Maintain a record of club activities through written records, photography, and video.
2.  Prepare the Chapter Scrapbook.
            F. It shall be the duty of the Chaplain to:
1.  Present a devotional at the beginning of every meeting.
            G. It shall be the duty of the Parliamentarian to:
1.  Maintain order and decide procedure at all business meetings according to the National Constitution and these By-Laws and Robert’s Rules of Order, Revised Edition.
Section 4.  Elections shall be held at the last regular meeting of the school year.  Those desiring to run for office shall notify one of their advisors or current officers of their intentions.  All candidates for an office will be required to give a short speech to the chapter before elections are held.
Section 5.  A majority of the votes cast shall be necessary to elect any chapter officer.
Section 6.  Officers will meet with the chapter advisors during the summer to make plans for the year.  During the school year, the officers will meet prior to regular meetings to prepare the agenda.
Section 7.  Vacancies before a term is up may be caused by resignations or removal by the Executive Committee for failure to fulfill duties or loss of membership.

ARTICLE III
Committees


Section 1.  Executive Committee.  The Executive Committee will consist of officers and chapter advisors.
Section 2.  Other Committees for publicity, hospitality, or special projects may be appointed by the Executive Committee.  A committee chairman shall be named by the Executive Committee.

ARTICLE IV
Meetings


Section 1.  Meetings shall be held according to the Club Schedule prepared by the assistant principal.
Section 2.  Special meetings may be called by the Executive Committee if deemed necessary and shall be held at a time convenient to the majority of members.

ARTICLE V
State Convention


Section 1.  The chapter will make every effort to attend the State Convention each year.  Members will be given an opportunity to attend with the cost being shared by the chapter and member.

ARTICLE VI
Scholarships


Section 1.  The chapter will present a $500 scholarship to a member of the senior class each year.  This recipient shall not be a member of NHS but shall display good study habits, a strong work ethic, and show intent to attend college.
Section 2.  Selection of this scholarship participant will be by the senior members of the chapter.

Section 3.  Scholarships sponsored by GANHS or the National Association of NHS will be governed by the rules of those organizations.

ARTICLE VII
Amendments


Section 1.  Amendments may be proposed at any regular meeting of the chapter provided they are presented in writing to the Executive Committee at least seven days prior to the meeting.
Section 2.  A 2/3 majority of all active members shall be required to amend these bylaws.
